MTK的研發能力 - 工程師

之前跟某在MTK的同學小聊了一下
當然他是把這間公司說的沒救了一樣
畢竟MTK最近錢發得比較少讓大家不爽
而我想問的是,這間公司到底有沒有研發能力?
我就討論手機應用處理器裡面最核心的三個技術GPU/CPU/modem
1.GPU:
我五六年前差點要去MTK新成立的GPU組
算是業內人士所以略有涉略
要知道GPU是很有技術含量的
三星在同時間開始做
到現在也只有低階的做出來而且做得爛爛的拿不太上檯面
蘋果更早一點想自製GPU
但前兩天的新聞說兩年後才要放棄Imagnation改用完全自製
至於高通是當年乾脆把ATI(GPU大廠)整個行動部門買下來
所以才能一直用自己的。
反觀聯發科,兩三年前竟然做到一半全砍掉不做了...
2.CPU
MTK身為世界第二大手機應用處理器(AP)廠
卻到現在還在買IP(買ARM做好的電路來兜自己的晶片)
我一直覺得超級不可思議
像蘋果/高通/NV都是買指令集(類似買規格的概念)然後自己設計電路。
CPU當然是高技術含量的東西
能做CPU是技術實力的展現
也是累積競爭門檻的工具...可以在指令集上玩很多客制化的東西
MTK連這個都不肯自己做(搞不好也是做不出來?)
(晶心應該不能算MTK的直接子公司所以不算)
3.modem
通訊基頻這方面不是我的本行不熟
我只知道聯發科身為世界第二大AP廠
看新聞好像連modem這樣核心通訊技術的東西也落後好幾間公司幾個世代(?)...
4.結論
整體說來,MTK在手機AP最核心的運算(CPU/GPU)沒能力自己做
通訊技術(modem)也不能當頭
這間公司的研發能力是不是問題很大啊?
畢竟MTK是世界第3 or 4大無晶圓IC設計廠
世界差不多前十大半導體公司
我拿世界級公司的等級要求這間公司該有核心技術
該做有前瞻性的長期與高風險投資應該不為過
但好像跟其他同量級公司比起來(像是NV/AMD),MTK很不能專注在研發上?
這間公司難道只會靠整合、兜IP、
創新的商業模式(但過幾年就很快被學走)、併購以及分拆買賣子公司來賺錢?
卻沒有長遠的核心研發競爭力?
看看世界其他IC大廠,雖然也搞這些東西來賺錢
但至少都有一些領先其他公司的研發能力。
龍頭都這樣,台灣的IC設計到底怎麼會走到這一個地步?
我猜測這典型的是因為追求兩三年內的短期財報好看與股東利益極大化
而放棄了長期高成本高風險的投資(技術研發與持有)
不願意深耕技術,買現成的最快最有利短期財報的美化...
我一直覺得這是台灣電子業的通病...
看看前幾年爛掉的AMD/NVIDIA能在去年漲幾倍谷底翻紅
其中一個理由就是他們就算在谷底
手上還是握有很強大的技術基礎與研發能力...
這我在MTK上面似乎看不到...
一但MTK陷入谷底後,是不是根本沒有本錢翻身?
以上旁觀者的偏見,PO在自己的FB結果同溫層MTK的同學都不反駁...
