英特爾不滿「製程進步、密度沒有」 台積電這樣說

〔財經頻道/綜合報導〕處理器龍頭英特爾(Intel)近來14奈米製程產能吃緊、10奈米製程又還未量產,正處於青黃不接的階段,續以14奈米製程產品為主力。但英特爾在數年前就不滿,認為此種命名在製程進展上有誤導性,對此台積電全球行銷主管Godfrey Cheng表示,製程數字早就不真正代表物理尺度。
《PCGamesN》指出,Godfrey Cheng日前參加超微半導體(AMD)研討會時,被問到7奈米製程與晶管密度之間的關係。他回應,從0.35微米(350奈米)製程以來,該數字就已不真正代表物理尺度,7奈米或N7只是業界對此世代節點的標準術語。但他也說,「我們需要為這些節點提供另1個不同於現況的語言來描述」。
英特爾在2017年便對這種毫無代表性的命名法不以為然,認為此種稱呼與晶管密度不符的情況需要改變。該公司前處理器架構和集成總監Mark Bohr(去年已退休)在該篇2017年文章表示,業界需要標準化的密度指標來平衡競爭環境,因為擁有先進製程的公司只有命名名稱進步、密度沒有。
Bohr主張,客戶應該要能輕鬆比較不同晶片製造商、不同製程的各種產品,因半導體工藝越來越複雜,設計也越來越多樣化。英特爾當時支持以「每平方毫米含多少晶管」的密度公式來命名,但至今無人採用。
而目前無論是PC或是手機,使用晶片的製程都已「坐7望5」,像是對手超微半導體(AMD)獲台積電7奈米製程加持,新系列處理器聲勢與股價一路向上;傳高通的5G modem晶片也交由三星和台積電的5奈米製程生產。
