英特爾(Intel)24日透過新聞稿指出,英特爾共同創辦人摩爾(Gordon Moore)24日在
夏威夷逝世,享耆壽94歲。
摩爾於1968年7月與其長年來的同事諾伊斯(Robert Noyce)共同創辦英特爾,其最初擔
任英特爾副總裁的角色,在1975年出任總裁,並於1979年被任命為董事會主席以及執行長
,直至1987卸下執行長大任。
摩爾於1965年提出知名的摩爾定律(Moore’s law),其經過長期觀察後發現,積體電路
上可容納的電晶體數目,約每隔兩年便會增加一倍,同樣運算速度的晶片價格則每兩年會
變成二分之一。曾任英特爾執行長的豪斯(David House)隨後將摩爾定律的內容微調,
他認為,每隔18個月便可將晶片的效能提高一倍,是一種以倍數增長的觀測。
不過,摩爾定律是否已走到極限近年逐漸成為市場討論的焦點,隨著半導體製程技術不斷
精進,許多人認為半導體技術已到達極限,輝達(Nvidia)創辦人黃仁勳便曾公開表示摩
爾定律已死,他在2022年的GTC大會中,針對GeForce RTX 40系列GPU價格調高一事解釋道
,由於先進製程的生產成本愈來愈貴,過往用類似成本得到二倍效能、或是每隔一年半就
能以一半成本獲得相同效能的預期,早已成為往事,他直言摩爾定律已不再適用。
不過英特爾執行長基辛格(Pat Gelsinger)仍堅決捍衛摩爾定律的地位,他在2022年的I
ntel Innovation大會上反駁黃仁薰的說法,基辛格指出摩爾定律仍活得很好(alive and
well),而且至少未來10年仍有效,英特爾已計畫在4年內完成5個節點製程,並持續挖
掘元素週期表(開發新材料)的無限可能。
台積電創辦人張忠謀於16日出席天下雜誌的「半導體世紀對談」時便回憶道,其構思晶圓
代工模式的概念時,摩爾定律才剛起步,晶片產業當時仍不複雜,蓋一座晶圓廠僅需2,00
0萬美元左右,並非高不可攀,相較於現在動輒上百億美元有著天壤之別。而被問及創立
台積電的願景時,張忠謀也舉摩爾為例提到,摩爾退休後曾被媒體問到是否有想過英特爾
會如此成功,摩爾回答表示從未想到。
