Summary
The Monetization manager will be responsible for successfully monetizing
PopCap’s first “free-to-play” social game in China, also contributing to
the success of PopCap’s social games throughout the Asia/Pacific region.
This is a key position on the operations team, offering the potential for
huge impact to the right candidate. Success in this role demands strong
analytical skills and out-of-the-box creative thinking, as well as close
collaboration with other teams including the game studio, technical
operations, community management, marketing, and customer support.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
‧Monetize PopCap’s “free-to-play” social games effectively to maximize
profitability without sacrificing an immersive, quality player experience,
which includes:
o Manage the in-game item store. Create new mechanism, items and sales
promotions, set item prices, oversee in-game marketing and promotion
efforts, etc. Work closely with the studio to design and create
new items for games.
o Oversee the in-game economy. Regulate money supply, adjust exchange rates,
etc. Collaborate with the game studio to ensure there are enough money “
sources” and “sinks” to keep the economy in balance.
o Apply an understanding of players and player psychology to help the game
studio design game systems that allow for enjoyable free play, while also
providing numerous opportunities for players to pay to enhance their
experience.
‧Minimize user attrition by continuously updating and enhancing the in-game
player experience, which includes:
o Contribute to the roll-out of new content, items, games, and features to
players on a frequent basis through close collaboration with the game
studio.
o Work with the community manager to schedule frequent events and tournaments.
‧Drive continuous improvement through extensive data analysis and
monitoring, which includes:
o Assist in the creation of a comprehensive business intelligence system for
ongoing data analysis by communicating requirements to both technical
operations and the game studio. Ensure the right metrics are
captured and are available for later analysis.
o Analyze the voluminous usage data generated by ongoing operations, and
deliver regular and ad hoc reports as needed to stakeholders throughout
PopCap, including the studio, finance, and business development.
o Set up multivariate tests to increase the monetization effectiveness of
in-game features as well as viral marketing tools and techniques for
player growth.
‧Participate in the new product development process, which includes:
o Identify and suggest improvements or new features to facilitate more
efficient or profitable operations.
o Write requirements for any operations tools required for successful
operation.
o Participate in design reviews for new and upcoming releases.
Experience and Qualifications
‧2-3 years of experience in the monetization of social game or online game
operations.
‧Excellent analytical skills with a high attention to detail and experience
with multivariate testing.
‧Passion for creating fun and compelling user experiences.
‧Excellent communication skills, including both fluent Chinese and English
skills and strong writing ability.
‧Ability to work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines.
‧Performance under pressure or in a crisis, triaging and prioritizing
issues appropriately and helping keep other team members focused on
the work at hand.
‧A BA/BS degree in engineering field or BE is preferred.
‧Previous experience operating in China a plus.
