西雅圖待了四年多,要搬回房子貴的不是人買得起的矽谷了。
因為某間公司的pager常常半夜三點叫人起來尿尿,
老闆又常常講一些很不誠實的話當騙人布,
@WalmartLabs剛好來西雅圖徵才,
過了一輪phone interview之後,
就去Seattle downtown的Hyatt做了半天的onsite。
題目不難,頂多就是Microsoft的coding等級,
一些design/ranking/relevance跟MapReduce,
加上一些比較像是behavior的問題,
之後聊了幾次,就拿到San Bruno的offer。
Walmart?
我一開始也很驚訝,每次換工作都嚷嚷要去startup的我,
最後居然加入全世界最大的私人公司(比郭董的鴻海大軍還大),
Walmart並不是一般人認為的科技業,
Walmart.com的網頁用西雅圖某間公司的標準來看也非常陽春/有待加強;
不過在Walmart.com現有的基礎上,你可以看到自己的機會。
這間公司是之前的Kosmix,2011/4被Walmart買下來以後,
打算用這裡當做創新中心,
目前分成四個team,
Search、Mobile/Social、Demand Generation跟Smart Pricing。
整個@WalmartLabs才100人,今年預計要再徵大概50人,組織架構非常的扁平,
engineer直接report給VP,
VP report給EVP/Walmart.com CEO(co-founder離職了,Orz),
然後就是整個Walmart的CEO了
(所以大概再過20年,我應該可以變成Walmart的CEO...)。
待過幾間大公司之後,我對於疊床架屋的management感到非常冷感,
也許這種非常扁平的機制可以有些不一樣的變化。
@WalmartLabs找了很多相當不錯的engineer,
比如說做OAuth的Eran Hammer(他之前也待過Y!,大心),
Palm/HP/webOS的Ben Galbraith/Dion Almaer
(好吧,他們可能有好便宜的TouchPad),
還有一堆從Microsoft/Amazon/Yahoo!/eBay/Google挖來,
不便宜可是好用的engineer。
Walmart最近還買了一間叫做一號店(yihaodian.com)的玩意,
據說在中國也有相當多的計畫在進行...。
