Unique sacred buildings are preserved in Silesian Swidnica and Jawor; they
are part of the World Heritage. Originally, there was a third church of this kind in Glogow, but it
was destroyed by fire in 1758.

The churches of peace got their name from the Peace of Westphalia, which
ended the European wars of religion in 1648 and paved the way for the equal
status of the Catholic and Protestant Churches. One result was the concession
to the Silesian Protestants to build three Protestant churches. Silesia
belonged to the traditionally Catholic Hapsburg Empire that had confiscated
the Protestant churches during the Counter Reformation. The requirements for
the new construction were harsh though: they had to be built outside the city walls, the only allowed construction material was wood, loam
and straw, towers and bells were forbidden. Moreover, the construction had to be paid for by the
congregation and carried out within one year.
