這篇文章後來有提到一個學者叫索洛金(Pitirim Sorokin)
他認為西方歷史中的人類精神狀態(mentality心態?)可以大致上分成兩種
ideational mentality 和 sensate mentality
不清楚這兩個字該怎麼翻才好
mentality這個字指的是精神狀態 心理狀態
ideational mentality 指的是較為偏重觀念的心態
sensate mentality指的則是相反 偏重感覺的心態
(我可以這麼翻嗎? 把ideational mentality翻成 偏重觀念的心態??)
索洛金認為人類的精神歷史就是在這兩端擺盪
原文這段話這麼寫:
They showed that the Zeitgeist of the Western world has flunctuated
between sensate and ideational mentalities. Beginning with an ideational
environment of ideas in 600 B.C. it ocillitated to a sensate mentality
when the Roman Empire was at its peak, from there to a new ideational
symbolic environment in the late Middle Ages, then to a new sensate mentality
in our time.

自己揣測是
西元前600年 西方世界偏重觀念
到了羅馬帝國鼎盛時期 又偏為感官
到了中世紀末又開始轉為偏觀念
到現代又是偏感官
所以
600B.C ~ 羅馬帝國鼎盛 = 觀念
羅馬帝國鼎盛~中世紀晚期 = 感官(??)
中世紀晚期~ 現代 = 觀念
現在 ~ ??? 感官(?)
不知我理解的是否正確?
另外想問一些語句的問題
文中有一段談到兩個重要的民調學者
原文是這樣寫的:
Many pollsters picked up bits and pieces of this turmoil, but only
two rose to the occasion and provided comprehensive accounts.

這邊的rose to the occasion是甚麼意思??
還有一段是提到某些歷史上的大事件會影響人們的價值觀

這邊的with the first world war in mind是指???
對一次大戰還有印象? 還是??
這裡的主詞應該是Mannheim
所以對一次大戰有印象的 是Mannheim這個人?
這句要怎麼翻譯比較好?
(後面的句子都能看懂且能翻譯)
最後問一下大家 priorities 這個字 該怎麼譯比較好
譬如 在這個句子裡
values are generalized, consistent priorites for how we want to live.
這裡的priority該翻成首要任務, 優先之事, 優先順序, 還是??
又the repeated swings between extremes do not mean that
dialectic priorities usually revert to any position we call 'normal.'
翻成辯證的首要之務好像有點怪?
不然就是像
an individual's personal priorities may mature and attain balance with age
personal priorities 可以譯成個人的優先順序嗎?
每次碰到priority這個字 總是猶豫要怎麼翻比較
英文可以理解 但中文要找個相對應的詞 有點困難
