一點淺見：

than在這段文字中是接續better (substitute)而來，

因此譯文或許可修改成：

吳爾芙可自由出入父親的圖書館。當時女性無法獲得公立學校跟大學的教育，而就該類教
（藏書室？）
育的替代品而言，吳爾芙父親的圖書館優於當時多數女性所能企及者。

文字可能不甚漂亮簡潔，不過意思大致上是如此。
