Taiwan pledged US$50 million in aid yesterday to countries hit by the
devastating quake and tsunamis, as officials urged the public to donate money
for the survivors.

"The scope of damage was much bigger than what was reported earlier," Vice

Local newspaper said Taiwan had offered the eighth-largest aid sum in the
world, amounting to around NT$1.6 billion. The sum was equivalent to Taiwan's
23 million people donating NT$70 each to survivors of Asia's deadly tidal
waves.
根據台灣當地報紙的報導,台灣捐獻的金錢排名全世界第八名,大約是16億台幣. 總金額相
當於是全台灣二千三百萬人,一人捐出70元台幣給南亞經過致命海嘯的生還者.

A further US$15 million of the total sum will be used in providing medical
supplies and the remaining US$15 million will help with long-term projects
such as community rehabilitation.

Health Minister Chen Chien-jen said 200 Taiwanese doctors and nurses will
staff some 50 makeshift clinics in affected countries, bringing 3,000 tons of
medical supplies with them.

Some local media commentators said the aid boost from Taiwan's initial US$5
million was an attempt by the government to raise Taiwan's international
visibility.

Yen dismissed this speculation, saying it was a chance to repay the
international community for the care and aid the island received when it was
struck by the deadly September 21 earthquake in 1999.
