: 我想大概的意思是
: "長久為事業煩惱..並且不斷讓自己的心思放在如何於最短時間內賺最多的錢...
: 為了繼續如此...我必須降低(?抓不到準確的字)自己超越永久復原的希望...."

的話，我最後一定會墮入無望復原的深淵。」
By "beyond hope of permanent recovery", I think Carnegie meant that
if he continues his money-driven way of life, there's no hope for him
to retrieve his intellectual and art pursuits.
